2011 Yokohama Triennale 2011

Hi, everyone.

It's yui again. Don't leave this blog, though it's my article again! haha

http://www.yokohamatriennale.jp/

Today, I'll introduce you Yokohama Triennale 2011.

The Japan Foundation supports this event.

It has been open since August actually, and will end very soon on November 6th.

Check it now, if you haven't ;)

http://www.yokohamatriennale.jp/

Yokohama Triennale has two main venues, Yokohama Museum of Art and BankART Studio NYK.

And other than these two, they have various events in communities nearby.

Quite many artists offer their works to Yokohama Triennale.

In front of Yokohama Museum of Art, there were many statues in line...

f:id:japanfoundation:20111024172251j:image

These are all artworks.

There were 12 in total, and each of them represents each month of the year.

Visitors were taking photos with their birth month.

f:id:japanfoundation:20111024172327j:image:leftf:id:japanfoundation:20111024172324j:image:left

Yokohama Museum is so big that it has a lot of works.

Those are very unique and different, from the huge one like pipe organ made of iron pipe to another one like looking at small artcrafts in distance with telescope.

This is an example of the installation. It's beautiful, isnt it?

f:id:japanfoundation:20111024172812j:image:leftf:id:japanfoundation:20111024172809j:image:left

Let me introduce another venue, BankART Studio NYK, too.

Free shuttles run between venues, but the bus was crowded when I went there(maybe it was because it was holiday).

Staff told me that it's just 20-minuite walk to BankART from Yokohama Museum, so I walked to BankART, dropping in many places.

If it's a good weather, I recommend you to walk around. Yokohama is a beautiful city and has many parks, which makes walking fun.

Having lunch at park sounds nicer :)

BankART Studio

BantART Studio has its exhibition on 3 floors.

One of the installations passes through from the 1st floor to 3rd floor.(please go and check, if you're interested in!)

You can touch and play with some artworks, or you can watch videos like movies....

There were lots of exhibitions at BantART too!

Both of the venues have many exhibitions, so if you have time, you'd better to spend one day for one venue.

Also I went to Kogane-cho.

They have artspace underneath the elevated railway tracks. Events like talk sessions are held there as well as there are a cafe or a secondhand book store, etc.

You can imagine how it's like, if I say that art space and shops suddenly apear in the middle of the old town walking along the narrow path,,,

The concept of Kogane-cho bazar includes shift of the town image from prostitution to arts and creativity. Thus sometimes buildings and artists' works make fresh collaboration.

It is an interesting experience to go to and see a plane where you wouldn't visit in ordinary life.

I might be able to go around more, if I had more time and energy..

So, this is my short report on Yokohama Triennale!

I did't touch the detail for those who haven't been there in oder not to deprive their pleasure to see exhibitions.

Because Yokohama Triennale consists of various artists' works, so even if you aren't familiar with arts, I am pretty sure that you can find some of them interesting.

Autumn is the season for Art!

Check it out ;)

f:id:japanfoundation:20110708150817g:image:medium:right

Aharan wa Saharan!

It is getting cooler day by day in Cairo.

Many people have stereo type image of Egypt,

as “It must be very hot all the year.”

We see tourists, who wear T-shirt and short pants, are shivering with cold

at Cairo Airport in the middle of winter!

Japanese animation and Manga(Japanese comics) are quite popular in Egypt.

We can see Japanese animation everyday not only at cartoon channels

but also at many satellite channels(There are more than 700 satellite channels.)

Egyptian is crazy about internet and they came across Japanese animation and Manga

in video sites.

There is a facebook group for Japanese Animation lovers “Anime Aiko-ka(Egypt)”

and nearly 1400 members are talking enthusiastically about Japanese animation.

and encourage friendship between Egyptian and Japanese, in the library.

Let’s have a look “J-POP salon”.

f:id:japanfoundation:20111026162506j:image:w360:left

This is a corner for “theme of this month”. We decide theme of J-POP salon every month and change display at this corner.

The theme of this month is “The world of J-POP culture”,

we display objects such as plamodels, figures, games and toys related with Japanese animation and comics

and also introduce some books, comics and CDs according to the theme.

I would like to report you about opening ceremony of “J-POP salon”.

We had Opening ceremony of “J-POP salon” on 20th of October

With Over 50 attendance including ambassador of Japan to Egypt Mr.OKUDA.

After speech and introduction of J-POP salon, Two Egyptian Anime & manga lovers, they call themselves ”OTAKU”,

gave us presentation about “Me and Japanese Animation & Manga”.

They talked enthusiastically about the reason why they got interested in Japanese Animation

and manga ,how it effected on their life, what is the attractive points of Japanese animation and manga,

and their favorite Animation and manga.

To celebrate the opening of J-POP salon, we held Japanese animation & manga drawing contest.

There were 59 entries for this contest, and we selected a winner in original work section( 27entries)

,and a winner in illustration of Japanese Animation and manga section(32 entries) and also two persons

for award of manager and for encouraging prize and we did an awards ceremony.

f:id:japanfoundation:20111026162510j:image:w360

Actually we didn’t expect high revel drawing, because there is no art class in the school in Egypt.

But when we started selection, we were so impressed by their works.

The revel of drawing was quite high and it was difficult to select winners.

After ceremony, we enjoyed Japanese Anime-songs.

Egyptian Anime-lovers sang songs from “NARUTO”,” GATCHAMAN”,DORAEMON””MAZINGER- Z” in Japanese.

f:id:japanfoundation:20111026162513j:image:w360

Finally, “NORIE-GAGA”, the unit of Furuya Manager and Sato Director entertained people with Japanese Anime-songs.

f:id:japanfoundation:20111026162512j:image:w360

Recently we have new comers in our library and events. They are not Japanese language students,

but they got interested in Japan because of Japanese Animation and Manga.

They are not only participating lectures and Events of us but also starting their own activities

such as establishing IGO & SHOGI group and singing Anime-songs group and eager to know about Japanese culture

and to enjoy it positively.

They are ready for the first COSPLAY festival in Egypt.

So we are going to hold events for introduction and experience Japanese POP culture to meet their expectations.

After opening ceremony, on the way back to home, I saw many people came together with Libyan national flags

and setting off firecrackers on the street in Mohandeseen.

They were Libyans living in Egypt and celebrated Kadafi`s death. It was top news in Egypt too.

But Egyptian was not so enthusiastic about it.
