Greetings from Jakarta, Indonesia!

Last month, in September, Japanese Studies and Intellectual Studies Section of the Japan Foundation, Jakarta, successfully held two big events.

On Friday night, September 20th, our staffs went to Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah to held Cinema Caravan: Hope and Dream Project. In this project, we are visiting some public and private schools, universities and also pondok pesantren (Islamic based boarding school) to screen Japanese films and teach Japanese cultures and values.

To our surprise, when we arrived, there were around 1450 Muslim students (commonly called as santri) welcoming and waiting for was our section’s biggest event ever, in term of number of the participants.

Without making them waiting any longer, we screened a film, titled “Shodo Girls”, a comedy-drama film about a group of high school girls who joined a Japanese calligraphy club in small town, Shikokuchuo, a town that specializes in making paper. After gasping, laughing and clapping hands together during the film screened, we closed the night with a short discussions about the moral story and lesson learned from the film, lessons about not giving up in chasing hopes and dreams.

In the last night of the month, Monday September 30th, the Japan Foundation, Jakarta, held the 4th Discussion Forum under the theme of "Religion and Identity: How Tolerant are We?”. It was the fourth of a set of events with 5 discussion forums, "In Search for Identity: Series of Discussion Forums Inspired by Indonesian Literature", and co-hosted by the Lontar Foundation.

Why religion? Because religion, as an institutionalized form of faith, is becoming a value that able to construct ones identity, which then also used to define and perceive people and their relations within society. The enlightening and thought-provoking discussion started with some questions such as, “How important is your religion to you?”, “How is your religion affect your social behavior?” and “How do you interact towards others with different religions as yours?”

For almost three hours, we had a very rare and interesting opportunity of hearing stories of famous and courageous peoples who are fighting for religious tolerance in Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Nasaruddin Umar, MA. (Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs), Ms. Yenny Wahid (Director of the Wahid Institute and daughter of Mr. Abdurrachman Wahid or Gus Dur, the 4th President of Indonesia), Father Franz Magnis-Suseno (Driyarkara School of Philosophy), Mr. Solahudin (Author of ‘The Roots of Terrorism in Indonesia’) and Dr. Tadashi Ogawa (Director General of The Japan Foundation, Jakarta).

During the discussion, Father Franz Magnis-Suseno, shared that to counter religion intolerance we should remember and embrace traditional human values, the values of caring, compassion, fairness, justice and forgiving. Also, stop any kind of violence and start to acknowledge the freedom of religion and worship.

Through these events, we hoped that we could help to create a strong friendship and harmony within society, in Indonesia.
