JF Nihongo Courses in Los Angeles ／ JF日本語コース in ロサンゼルス

The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, introduced JF Nihongo Courses over two years ago and we have steadily nurtured our students from the initial 59 in four courses during winter of 2012 to 108 students in nine courses during the current spring quarter.

国際交流基金ロサンゼルス日本文化センターは、約2年前にJF日本語コースを開設しました。2012年冬学期の4コース、59名から始まり、その後着実に参加者を伸ばして現在春学期には9コース、108名の生徒が当センターで日本語を学んでいます。

There are two locations including our classroom in Little Tokyo location as well as our office in the Miracle Mile. We offer four courses including Mastering Kana for introductory learners, Making Friends and Fun With Friends for beginners, and Business Japanese for intermediate/advanced learners.

教室は、リトル東京と、ミラクルマイルにある私たちの事務所の2箇所にあります。ひらがなを学ぶ入門クラス、友達と楽しく学ぶ初心者向けクラス、ビジネス日本語の中級と上級の4コースから選べます。

Our language classes typically cater to adults above the age of 18, but every summer we offer a week-long Summer Camp course at our Little Tokyo location for young Japanese language learners to visit the historical area of Downtown Los Angeles and to practice their Japanese at the local stores.

国際交流基金の日本語クラスは、通常18歳以上の大人のみ参加が可能ですが、毎年夏にはリトル東京で若い人向けに1週間のサマーキャンプコースを開設しており、ロサンゼルスの市街地にある歴史的な地域を訪れて地元のお店で日本語を使う練習をしています。


From time to time, we also offer special one day workshops called Japanese for Fun that includes topics such as Making Sushi in Japanese and Celebrating Japanese New Year. These classes feature the cultural aspect of language learning so students are able to get a small taste of Japanese culture here in LA.

また、日本語でお寿司づくりや日本のお正月をお祝いしようというテーマで「Japanese for Fun」という特別1日ワークショップをときどき開催しています。このようなクラスでは、日本の習慣や文化にまつわる言葉を学ぶので、生徒たちはロサンゼルスにいながら日本文化を少し味わうことができます。

You may wonder whatkind of students study Japanese with us here in Los Angeles and you will be surprised to learn that we have a diverse group of individuals who are interested in learning Japanese for a wide variety of reasons.

どんな人たちがロサンゼルスで私たちと一緒に日本語を学んでいるか、気になっているのではないでしょうか？様々なタイプの人たちが、それぞれの理由をもって日本語に興味を持ち学習していることにきっと驚くと思います！

Our students range from the casual learner interested in Japanese culture to those who have been learning for quite some time and want to use Japanese in greater aspects of their lives. There are also those who are interested in going to Japan for business or pleasure as well as those who are planning to start a career in Japan.

私たちの生徒さんは、日本文化に興味を持っている初心者から、日本語を既に長年学んでいて、生活の中で応用出来る日本語を習いたいという方まで多岐にわたります。また仕事や余暇で日本に行くことに関心を持っている方や、日本で仕事を始める予定の方もいます。

During the past two years, we have also selected one outstanding student from all our classes to participate in our special short term training program at the Japan Foundation, Japanese Language Institute Kansai. This provides an opportunity for on very lucky student to experience Japanese culture first hand while meeting other students from around the world who share the same interest in learning Japanese.

開設してからの2年の間には、クラスから優秀な生徒を一人選び、国際交流基金　関西国際センターの特別短期研修プログラムに参加してもらいました。このプログラムに参加したラッキーな生徒は、日本文化に直に触れる経験とともに、日本語を学ぶモチベーションを共有する世界中から集まった生徒さんたちと出会う機会を得ることができました。

As our language classes evolve, we will continually create new courses to support our wide range of learners. We are excited about meeting new Angelinos who are interested in learning Japanese with us and look forward to another year of JF Nihongo Courses here in Los Angeles.

ロサンゼルス日本文化センターでは、今ある日本語クラスの発展に尽力するとともに、幅広い学習者にあわせて引き続き新しいコースを開いていきます。私たちと一緒に日本語を勉強したいLAっ子に会えることを楽しみに、JF日本語コースの新たな次の1年に期待しています。

Japanese Students Visits JFLA on the Kakehashi Project／KAKEHASHI Projectに参加中の日本の学生がJFLAにやってきました。

On Tuesday, January 14, over 100 Japanese high school and college students from six different schools visited the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, to take part in an orientation during the first stop of a multi-city youth exchange tour of the United States. While here, they learned about the activities of JFLA, and the current conditions of Japanese language education in the US.  Afterwards, we provided them with a lesson on using social media like Facebook and Twitter to engage in conversation with local high schoolers.
米国複数都市を訪問する青少年交流事業に6つの高校・高専から計100人以上の日本の生徒が現在参加しています。本事業に参加している学生たちが、最初の経由都市滞在中の1月14日（火）、オリエンテーションに参加するためJFLA（ロサンゼルス日本文化センター）にやってきました。学生たちはJFLAの活動、米国での日本語教育の現状について学び、また、現地の高校に通う学生たちと会話をするためのフェイスブックやツイッターの使い方のレッスンを受けました。

They spent the next few days going through orientation, and visiting local schools to share their knowledge of Japan with students of various levels in the Los Angeles area. The Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles also held a reception in honor of the students at the Japanese American National Museum where they learned about the history of their American cousins. At the reception, they gave a presentation about Japan in front of the guests. Izumi high school talked about the history of Samurais and Ninjas while Odate Homei High School talked about the Japanese Samurai Spirits.
During the reception, participants had the opportunity to mingle with special guests including students learning Japanese from local schools and business leaders in the community. After four days in Los Angeles, the group will continue on their journey to Houston before splitting up to visit schools in Minnesota, Colorado, Florida, and Guam.
そのあとの数日間は、オリエンテーションの続きを行ったり、ロサンゼルス地域の学校を訪問して様々な生徒に会い、日本についての知識を伝えたりして過ごしました。また、在ロサンゼルス日本国領事館は、学生たちの訪問を記念して全米日系人博物館でレセプションを開いてくれました。学生たちは、日系アメリカ人の歴史を学ぶこともできました。レセプションでは、彼らは日本についてのプレゼンテーションも行いました。事業に参加している大阪府立和泉高等学校の面々は侍や忍者の歴史についてのプレゼンを披露し、秋田県立大館鳳鳴高等学校は、日本人のサムライスピリットについて話しました。

レセプションの間、彼らは、現地の学校で日本語を学ぶ生徒や地域のビジネスリーダーなどスペシャルなゲストとの交流も楽しんでいました。ロサンゼルスでの4日間の滞在のあとは、ヒューストン、そしてそのあといくつかに分かれてミネソタ、コロラド、フロリダ、グアムをそれぞれ訪問します。

Due to the wide geography of the US, and the extreme weather conditions from one area to another, we hope that all the participants will take care of themselves and wish them a memorable trip so they can take back many positive experiences and memories to share with their family and friends in Japan.
アメリカの国土は広く、エリアによって気候が極端に違うので、参加者みんなが体調に気をつけながら元気に過ごし、今回の滞在が思い出に残る旅になればいいなと思います。そしてたくさんの良い経験と思い出を日本に持ち帰り、それを日本にいる家族や友達に伝えてほしいと思います。

The Kakehashi Project is a fully-funded, large-scale youth exchange program between Japan and the United States. Promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Kakehashi aims to heighten potential interest in Japan and increase the number of overseas visitors to the country, as well as enhance international understanding of the “Japan brand,” or the nation’s strengths and attractiveness. The project is also anticipated to revitalize and boost the Japanese economy.

KAKEHASHI Projectは日本政府主催の大規模な日本と米国の青少年交流事業です。外務省の推進により、KAKEHASHI Projectは日本に対する潜在的な関心を増進させ、訪日外国人の増加を図るとともに、我が国の強みや魅力等の日本ブランドへの国際理解を増進させることを目的として行われます。事業の実施を通じて、日本経済の再生と活性化に資する効果も期待されます。

The objective of this program is to promote deeper mutual understanding among the people of Japan and the United States, enable future leaders of Japan-US exchanges to form networks, and help young people develop wider perspectives to encourage active roles at the global level in the future.
この青少年交流事業を通じて、日米の相互理解の深化、将来の日米交流の担い手層のネットワーク形成並びに青少年層におけるより広い視野を持ったグローバル人材の育成を推進します。

Handcrafted Form: Traditions and Techniques / 手仕事のかたち－伝統と手わざ－

Hello again from sunny southern California where the weather is still in the 70s everyday even though fall is just around the corner. It has been just over a year since we moved into our new location here on the Miracle Mile with museums, cultural institutions, and Hollywood nearby. We had a busy summer organizing many events for local Angelinos to enjoy Japanese culture, but I want to focus on a large exhibition we organized throughout the months of July and August.

みなさん、こんにちは！快晴の南カリフォルニアからです。秋も近いというのに、こちらでは毎日華氏70度 (摂氏21度) くらいの天気が続いています。ミラクル・マイルに引っ越してきてから、ちょうど一年が過ぎたところですが、この町には美術館や文化施設があり、ハリウッドも近いんです。地元のLAっ子に日本文化を楽しんでもらうために、いろいろなイベントを開催して忙しい夏を過ごしたのですが、7月から8月にかけて開催した大々的なイベントについてご紹介しますね。

The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, kicked off a six week exhibition titled Handcrafted Form, with a reception on Thursday, July 11, 2013. We displayed contemporary examples of traditional arts and crafts, which were made by master artisans in Japan to reflect the context of daily life, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, lacquer ware, woodcraft, papermaking, and writing implements. This exhibition was organized with the Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM), located within a five minute walk from our office, and visitors were encouraged to visit both venues to see all the items from the collection.


国際交流基金ロサンゼルス日本文化センターは、2013年7月11日(木曜日) に行われたレセプションを皮切りに、6週間にわたる「手仕事のかたち－伝統と手わざ－」 展を開催しました。日本の熟練した職人が生み出した陶磁器、織物、金工、漆器、木彫り製品、製紙、そして文房具など、日々の暮らしの中で育まれてきた統工芸や手工芸作品が展示されました。
 この展覧会は、ロサンゼルス日本文化センターから徒歩5分のクラフト・アンド・フォークアート・ミュージアム (CAFAM) と一緒に開催され、お客様には、両方の会場に足を運び、コレクションのすべての作品を観ていただくようにお願いしました。

In addition to the exhibit, we also participated in CAFAM’s Global Bazaar, on July 27, which showcased handmade crafts for sale by local artists that were influenced by Japanese style and traditions. We also held a live calligraphy performance on that day in front of our office with Uehira Baikei, a master calligrapher and teacher as well as the president of the Seishou Calligraphy Association in Osaka. He performed a calligraphy demonstration and also signed autographs for attendees.


また、7月27日には、CAFAM のグローバル・バザーに参加。バザーでは、日本のスタイルや伝統の影響を受けた地元の作家の作品が展示販売されました。当日は、ロサンゼルス日本文化センターの正面玄関前で、書道家、そして大阪の青霄書法会の代表であり書道師範でもある上平梅径氏によるライブイベントが開催され、上平梅径代表は、書道のデモンストレーションや、参加者のためにサインをしてくださいました。

During the six week period, we had over 3000 attendees come through the doors of JFLA and CAFAM and most of the attendees commented that the exhibit was beautiful and some even wanted to see more to satisfy their craving for Japanese artwork. After the exhibit ended, we packed everything up and prepared it for its journey to Uruguay, which is the next destination for the exhibit, and we hope they will enjoy this exhibition as much as we have.



6週間で3000人以上がJFLA と CAFAM の両会場を訪れ、その大半の方達が展示作品の美しさをほめてくださいました。日本の芸術作品への関心が深まり、もっと見せて欲しいと言ってくださる方もいたんですよ。展覧会終了後、作品を撤収、梱包して、次の開催地であるウルグアイへ搬送する準備をしました。ウルグアイでもロサンゼルスのように展覧会が盛り上がって欲しいです。

JFLA Lecture Series／JFLAレクチャーシリーズ

It has been almost 11 months since we moved to our new office on the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles and with our new location; we have been able to organize many more events that are open to the public. One of our most popular programs is our lecture series where we invite specialists in a field related to any aspect of Japan including, but not limited to, pop culture, gaming, politics, technology, research, traditional culture and food. Below is a list of all the lectures we have presented so far.
ロサンゼルスのミラクルマイル沿いにオフィスを移転してから、もうすぐ11ヶ月経ちますが、新オフィスでは、より多くの一般向けのイベントを開催することが出来る様になりました。JFLAで最も人気のあるイベントの一つであるレクチャーシリーズでは、ポップカルチャー、ゲーム、政治、テクノロジー、リサーチ、伝統文化、食、などなど日本の様々な分野に関するスペシャリストをお呼びしています。今回は、私たちが今までに開催した全レクチャーリストを紹介します！

Lecture 1: Explore the World of GO／囲碁の世界を知ろう
Date：December 15, 2013／2013年12月15日

For our very first lecture, we invited Andrew Okun, President of American Go Association, to talk about the ancient board game of Go with some hands on gaming afterwards. Participants had an educational afternoon learning about the history and development of the game as well as basic instructions to play the game. This lecture was organized in collaboration with the American Go Association.
第一回目のレクチャーでは、アメリカ囲碁協会会長、アンドリュー・オクン氏をお招きし、昔から日本に伝わる囲碁について、ゲームの実演も交えながらお話頂きました。参加者は、囲碁の歴史や発展、そして基本的なゲームの遊び方を教わり、学び多き午後を過ごしました。このレクチャーはアメリカ囲碁協会の協力のもと、開催されました。

Lecture 2: Paro – The World’s Most Therapeutic Robot／パロ–世界で最もセラピー効果のあるロボット
Date: January 12th, 2013／2013年1月12日

For the second lecture, we invited Dr. Takanori Shibata, the creator of PARO, the world’s most therapeutic robot to talk about his invention and allow the guests to experience the comforting effects of the robotic baby harp seal. Dr. Shibata also discussed the advancements of robotics in Japan and the ways that the cutting edge technology is used to help in everyday lives.
第二回目となるレクチャーでは世界で最もセラピー効果のあるロボット「パロ」のクリエーター、柴田崇徳博士を迎え、その開発についてのお話を伺い、また、参加者は「パロ」と実際に触れ合い、その癒し効果を体験することも出来ました。柴田博士は日本でのロボット工学の進歩や、これらの最先端技術をどのような方法で日常生活に役立てるか、などについて語られました。

Lecture 3: Restoration of Fukushima From 3.11／3月11日からの福島の復興
Date January 24th, 2013／2013年1月24日

During the month of January, we had another lecture with Satoru Mimura from the Fukushima Future Center for Regional Revitalization at Fukushima University. He talked about his work to support the people affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake by researching the effects of radiation caused by the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. Based on his findings, he hopes to develop a plan to offer prospects in support of the restoration and rehabilitation of Fukushima. This event was co-organized by the Japan America Society of Southern California.
引き続き1月には、福島大学うつくしまふくしま未来支援センターの三村悟氏をお招きしたレクチャーも開催しました。三村氏は、福島第一原子力発電所の放射能による影響についての研究を通して東日本大震災の被災者支援に取り組んでいます。また、その研究成果を基に福島の復興・再生支援の展望を提示していくことを目指しています。このイベントは南カリフォルニア日米協会との共催により実施いたしました。

Lecture 4: Anime and Hollywood／アニメとハリウッド
Date: February 20th, 2013／2013年2月20日

The popularity of anime has had a long history in the United States and to introduce it to a young audience, we invited Roland Kelts, author of “Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S.,” to discuss his views on Anime, its influences on Hollywood, and vice-versa. Keltz used many examples from his research to show the symbiotic relationship between American and Japanese culture. He was also on hand to sign copies of his book after the lecture.
アメリカにおけるアニメの人気には長い歴史があり、それを若い世代に紹介するため、『ジャパナメリカ―日本発ポップカルチャー革命―』の著者ローランド・ケルツ氏をお迎えし、アニメ、そのハリウッドでの影響などついて語っていただきました。ケルツ氏は研究成果から得たたくさんの例を出しながら、アメリカと日本文化の共生関係について説明しました。また、レクチャー後には、快く著書にサインをして下さいました。

Lecture 5: “Asian Voices” And the US Japan Relationship in 2013／「アジアの声」と2013年の米日関係
Date: March 1st, 2013／2013年3月1日

In March, we invited Aiko Doden, Senior News Commentator for Japan Broadcasting Corporation, to talk about many issues that have an effect on US Japan Relationship in 2013. This event was co-organized with the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Young Professionals and as a result we had many youth leaders in attendance who were interested in the world affairs and making a positive contribution to society.
3月は、NHK解説委員の道傳愛子氏をお招きし、2013年の米日関係に影響する様々な事柄についてお話頂きました。このイベントはLos Angeles World Affairs Council and Young Professionalsとの共催で行われたため、世界情勢に関心を持ち、社会に貢献しているたくさんの若きリーダーたちにご出席頂けました。

Lecture 6: Bento – Japanese Culture in a Box／弁当–箱の中の日本文化
Date: April 8th, 2013／2013年4月8日

For our sixth lecture, we invited Debra Samuels, Boston Globe food writer, cooking instructor and author of the popular cookbook “My Japanese Table: A Lifetime of Cooking with Friends and Family” to talk about her inspiration and love for the Japanese bento (lunch box). The lecture was divided into three parts where Samuels described her time in Japan and how she was introduced to the art of Japanese cuisines, demonstrated how she prepares her food, and invited participants to assemble their own bentos using pre-made items. Everyone who attended received a gift bag with a maccha cupcake featuring Samuels’ recipe and a box of green tea courtesy of Takaokaya.
第6回目は、日刊新聞ボストン・グローブのフードライター、クッキングインストラクター、そして“My Japanese Table: A Lifetime of Cooking with Friends and Family”という人気のある料理本の著者デブラ・サミュエルズ氏をお招きし、日本のお弁当から彼女が得るインスピレーション、そしてその魅力についてお話頂きました。レクチャーは３つのパートに分けられ、まずサミュエルズ氏は、日本で過ごした日々について、そしてどのように日本食の美について教わったかを話され、その後お弁当の準備の仕方のデモンストレーションをしました。また、用意してあったお弁当用の食品を用いて、参加者に実際にそれぞれのお弁当を作ってもらいました。イベントの最後には、参加者は皆、高岡屋からご提供頂いた抹茶ボックスとサミュエル氏のレシピで作られた抹茶カップケーキの入ったギフトバッグを受け取っていました。

Lecture 7: Watch & Learn – Classical Japanese Dance and Make-Up／見て学ぼう–『日本舞踊と化粧』
Date: April 10th, 2013／2013年4月10日

We invited Masako Nishikawa and Kirk Nishikawa Dixon from the Nishikawa School of Classical Japanese Odori (Dance) to talk about what they do and demonstrate Traditional Japanese Theatre Make-Up. After the initial presentation covering the history of Nishikawa Ryu, Kirk fielded questions from the crowd while Masako demonstrated the intricacies of Japanese theatre costumes from the white makeup to the elaborate hairpiece and kimono. At the end of the lecture, everyone wanted to take pictures with Masako, who was fully dressed for Classical Japanese Odori.
日本舞踊西川流の西川まさ子氏と西川カーク・ディクソン氏を迎えて、日本舞踊のレクチャーに加え、舞台化粧のデモンストレーションをご披露頂きました。西川流の歴史についての説明も含めたプレゼンテーションをされた後は、カーク氏が観客からの質問にお答えし、その間にまさ子氏が白塗りの舞台化粧、精巧な造りの鬘、着物など舞台衣装一式の着付けのデモンストレーションを行いました。参加者の皆は、日本舞踊の衣装にすっかり身を包んだまさ子氏と一緒に写真を撮りたがっていました。

Lecture 8: Curators’ View – Japanese Contemporary Photography／キュレーターズ・ビュー–『日本の現代写真』
Date: April 18th, 2013／2013年4月18日

Through the Japan Foundation’s Curator Exchange Program, Britt Salvesen, Curator and Head of the Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Amanda Maddox, Assistant Curator of Photographs at the Getty Museum, had the opportunity to visit Japan and tour many contemporary art museums in Japan with a focus on photography. During this lecture, they shared their experiences from the trip as well as their new interest in Japanese photography and art.
ロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館写真部門長・キュレーターのブリット・サルヴェセン氏とJ・ポール・ゲティ美術館写真部門、アシスタント・キュレーターのアマンダ・マドックス氏は、国際交流基金の学芸員招へいプログラムを通して来日し、写真に焦点を置いているたくさんの日本の現代美術館を訪問しました。このレクチャーでは両氏が日本訪問で経験したことや日本の写真・アートの興味深い新たな魅力についてお話されました。

The popularity of our lecture series has steadily grown during the past few months and we are currently in the process of organizing more lectures for the upcoming months. We will continue to present exciting and lively events here at JFLA that will appeal to all age groups and interests.
このレクチャーシリーズは、開始数ヶ月で着実に人気を得ており、現在は、近日中に開催を予定している次のレクチャーの企画・準備をしています。JFLAでは、あらゆる年代の、さまざまな興味を持つ方々みんなに楽しんでもらえる様に、エキサイティングで活気のあるイベントをこれからも開催していきたいと思います。

2012 JET Memorial Invitation Program

Hello from sunny southern California. My name is Thomas and I work at the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles!

太陽の光あふれる南カルフォニアからこんにちは！国際交流基金 ロサンゼルス日本文化センターのThomasです！

I want to share with you a program we organize called the JET Memorial Invitation Program (JET-MIP), which was started last year after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, to commemorate the lives of two Americans participating in the JET program named Taylor Anderson and Montgomery Dickson who sadly lost their lives during the disaster.

今回は国際交流基金が主催した「米国 JET 記念高校生招へい事業」というプログラムをご紹介しますね。東日本大震災の後、昨年スタートしたプログラムで、JETプログラムに参加されていたTaylor Anderson さんとMontgomery Dicksonさんという二人のアメリカ人を追悼するためのプログラムです。お二人は本当に残念なことに震災でお亡くなりになりました。

Participants for this program were selected from schools all across the United States and they have all been studying Japanese all throughout high school and most had never been to Japan. Their first stop was in Los Angeles where they participated in a pre-departure orientation at our office. Then it was off to Japan.

全米各地の高校から選ばれ、このプログラムに参加した高校生たちは、みなさん日本語を勉強してはいるものの、日本を訪れたことはありませんでした。そこで、まずはロサンゼルスにある私たちのオフィスで出発前のオリエンテーションに参加し、日本へと旅立って行きました。

During their initial stay, the participants learned about the institute, the JET program, and even some Tohoku dialect. They also spent some time making a collage showing various landmarks in the United States and cities where they are from. This was later presented to the elementary schools they visited. Then it was off to the Tohoku region.

オリエンテーションでは、参加者は国際交流基金 関西国際センターやJETプログラムについて、そしてなんと東北弁についても学びました。そして、アメリカのランドマークや自分たちの地元の街のランドマークのコラージュを作成したりもしました。このコラージュは、日本を訪れた際に小学校で披露されました。そしてこのオリエンテーションの後、高校生たちは東北へと向かったのでした。

While in the Tohoku region, they visited an elementary school and also participated in the first ever high school summit with students from two local high schools in Rikuzentakata. The topic of the summit was how they can work together for the future and after the discussions; the students presented their findings. This was a good opportunity for the participants to exchange ideas with their counterparts in Japan and make some new friends in the process.

東北滞在中、高校生たちは小学校を訪れ、陸前高田市の地元の高校2校の高校生と初の高校生サミットなるものに参加しました。サミットでは、「未来へ向かって共にできること」をテーマにディスカッションを行い、自分たちが調べて分かったことなどを発表しました。アメリカ人高校生にとって、日本の高校生と意見交換できるよい機会となったようです。サミットを通じて、新しい友情を育んだ高校生もいました。

The last few days in Tohoku were spent orienteering in Sendai and then it was off to Ishinomaki where the participants visited the local elementary school where Taylor Anderson taught and also Taylor’s Bunko (Reading corner), which was created in her memory. Later that day they had an exchange with the Kiwi Club, an English conversation group where Taylor taught and made friends. This event wrapped up the Tohoku portion of the trip as the participants returned to Sendai that night and flew back to Osaka the following day.

東北滞在の後半、高校生たちは仙台でのオリエンテーションに参加しました。その後、石巻に移動し、Taylor Andersonさんが英語を教えていた地元の小学校とTaylor さんを追悼して設けられたTaylor’s Bunko（読書コーナー）を訪れました。同じ日にTaylorさんが英語を教え、親交があった英会話サークル「Kiwi Club」と交流しました。このイベントをもって東北訪問は終了し、参加者たちは夜には仙台へ戻り、翌日仙台から大阪へと飛行機で旅立ちました。

Upon their return, they paid a visit to a local High School where they met their host brother or sister. Together, they travelled to the Consulate General of the United States in Osaka to talk about themes relating to international diplomacy. After visiting the Consulate, the students parted ways and the next day was spent in the classroom going over the Tohoku trip, learning Osaka dialect, and preparing for the weekend homestay.

大阪に戻ってから、高校生たちは地元の高校を訪れ、ホストブラザー・シスターたちと会いました。大阪のアメリカ総領事館を訪問し、国際外交に関するテーマについて話をする機会を得ました。総領事館を訪れた後、高校生たちは別行動をし、翌日は教室にて東北訪問をふり返ったり、大阪弁を学んだり、週末のホームスティへ向けて準備をしたりしました。

The big weekend finally arrived when the American students met their host families for a weekend of cultural experience in the Kansai region. When they returned from their homestay, the cultural experience continued at the Institute with workshops covering Wadaikos and Yukatas. On the final day at the institute, preparations began for the trip home and also for the completion ceremony. After the introductory speeches, the participants had a final chance to talk with their host families and even performed a song and dance. The night ended with final goodbyes and the next day, the group departed Osaka for the wrap-up meeting in Los Angeles.

そして、ついにその時がやってきました！アメリカ人高校生がホストファミリーと共に関西地方で異文化体験をする週末がやってきたのです。ホームスティから戻ってからも、和太鼓や浴衣ワークショップなどなど、国際交流基金関西国際センターでの異文化体験は続くのでした。センターでの最終日、帰国準備が始まり、終了式が開催されました。開式のスピーチに続いて、高校生たちはホストファミリーと最後におしゃべりをしたり、歌やダンスを披露したりしました。こうして、お別れの夜は過ぎ、高校生たちはロサンゼルスで今回のプログラムを総括するため、翌日帰国の途につきました。

At the wrap up meeting, the participants presented their experiences in Japan. Many talked about their eye opening experience, the friendly people they met during the trip and the new friends they made. This experience motivated them more to continue studying Japanese and eventually participate in exchange programs such as the JET program just like Taylor Anderson and Montgomery Dickson. After the meeting, the participants had one more night together as the program slowly came to a close. The following day, each participant would leave just as they had arrived and return back to their hometowns all across the United States.

ラップアップミーティングでは、参加者たちは日本で経験したことについてプレゼンをしました。多くの高校生たちが、初めて経験して驚いたこと、日本滞在中に出会った人たちのフレンドリーさ、新しく生まれた友情などについて触れました。今回のプログラムを経験し、高校生たちは日本語の勉強を続けたいとの思いをよりいっそう強くし、Taylor AndersonさんやMontgomery DicksonさんのようにJETプログラムなどの交流プログラムに参加したいとの声も聞かれました。ミーティングのあった日の夜は、もう一晩共に過ごし、プログラムの終わりがだんだんと近づいてきたのでした。翌日、参加者たちは初めてロサンゼルス日本文化センターにやって来た時と同じように、全米各地の地元の街へとそれぞれに戻っていきました。
