皆さん、こんにちは！ベトナム・ハノイのNhaです。

There is a saying in Vietnamese “bận tối mắt” which literally means in English as “too busy to open the eyes”. In short, I was super busy for a series of events during the past several months. I am sorry for my long silence but I hear there is also a saying in Japan “No news is good news”. Yes! During no update from me on this blog, there were a plethora of stimulating events in Vietnam.

ベトナムにはこんなことわざがあります。「bận tối mắt」。直訳すると、「忙しすぎて目も開けられない」という意味です。ここ数ヶ月の私がまさにこの状況で、イベント盛りだくさんで、ものすごく忙しかったです。このブログもすっかりご無沙汰してしまい、ごめんなさい。そういえば、日本にもこんなことわざがありますよね。「便りがないのは良い知らせ」。そうなんですよ！私がブログをお休みしている間に、ベトナムでは刺激的なイベントがたくさん開催されていたんです。

There were more varieties of arts and cultural events but this time let me focus on reporting our intellectual exchanges.

もっともっと紹介したい文化芸術関連イベントもあるのですが、今回は知的交流関連イベントについて詳しく報告しますね。

In the last quarter of the fiscal year 2011 – 2012, we conducted a series of lectures and seminars on various topics: “Railways and Modern History in Japan” by Prof. Takeshi Hara (Meiji Gakuin University) in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, traveling from Hue to Danang by the Vietnamese train, DVD screening and lectures on “A Remembrance of the 3.11 Tohoku Earthquake” by Prof. Toru Takanarita (Sendai University) and Prof. Dr. Taro Igarashi (Tohoku University) which were on air on VTV1 as one of the top news on Sunday 11 March’s morning news, “Contemporary Literature and Poetry in Japan” by Ms. Mimi Hachikai (Poet/Writer/Essayist) and “Arts and Culture as the Basis of a Nation” by Mr. Oriza Hirata, one of the most acclaimed playwrights in Japan. The feedbacks to each lecture were quite positive and we are encouraged to plan more intellectual activities in near future.

2011年の第4四半期、ベトナム日本文化交流センターはたくさんのレクチャーやセミナーを開催し、幅広いテーマを取り上げました。Hanoi、Hue、Ho Chi Minh市では、明治学院大学の原 武史教授による「Railways and Modern History in Japan」が開催され、先生ご自身もHue から Danangｍまで列車で国内を移動されました。仙台大学の高成田 享教授と東京大学の五十嵐太郎教授をお招きしてのDVD上映会＆レクチャー「A Remembrance of the 3.11 Tohoku Earthquake」は、3月11日にVTV1チャンネルの朝のニュースでトップニュースとして取り上げられました。蜂飼耳さん（詩人・ライター・エッセイスト）による「Contemporary Literature and Poetry in Japan」や、日本でも高く評価されている劇作家平田オリザさんによる「Arts and Culture as the Basis of a Nation」なども開催されました。イベントに参加してくださった方たちの反応も上々で、知的交流イベントをこれからもがんばって企画していこうという気持ちになりました。

One of the highlights in intellectual exchanges this fiscal year was a writer’s lecture by Mr. Masatsugu Ono. He came to Vietnam once last year to conduct his lecture on contemporary literature in Japan, focusing on the analysis of novels by Haruki Murakami and Kenzaburo Oe.

今年度の知的交流イベントのハイライトといえば、作家の小野正嗣さんによる講座でしょう。小野さんは昨年も講師としてベトナムに足を運んでくださり、日本現代文学についての講座の中で、村上春樹さんと大江健三郎さんの作品を解説してくださいました。

As you might know, Japanese literature nowadays becomes popular in Vietnam. The young people are crazy for the works of Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto, the two most popular Japanese best-seller writers in Vietnam. There are about 14 books of Haruki Murakami were translated into Vietnamese in which the latest one is “What I think when I run” and “1Q84” will come soon this year with the financial support of the Japan Foundation.

現在、ベトナムでは日本文学がとっても人気があるのをご存知でしょうか。若い人たちは村上春樹さんや吉本ばななさんに夢中で、お二人はベトナムでは1、2を争うベストセラー作家なんですよ～。村上作品は14冊ほどベトナム語に翻訳されていて、最新刊は「走ることについて語るときに僕の語ること」。「1Q84」も国際交流基金の助成を得て、まもなく出版される予定です。

Ono’s focus on Haruki’s novels entertained a lot of professors, writers and critics, intellectually, and they also enjoyed Ono’s novel through the booklet translated into Vietnamese by the Japan Foundation. This successful lecture consequently connected him to one young editor of Tre Publishing House and Tre Publishing House decided to publish Ono’s two novels (“Ningyo no Uta [Lit. The Song of Mermaid]” and “Nigiyakana Wan ni Seowareta Fune [Lit. The Ship Piggybacked by the Jolly Bay]) and one essay in a book “(Vietnamese) [Lit. The Song of Mermaid] in Vietnamese in February 2012.

多くの教授、作家、批評家が小野さんによる村上作品の解説に知的刺激を受け、私たちが用意したベトナム語のブックレットでご紹介した小野さんの作品も楽しまれていました。このレクチャーの成功がご縁で小野さんとTre Publishing Houseの若手編集者とが出会い、Tre Publishing Houseが、小野さん執筆の小説2作品(“Ningyo no Uta [Lit. The Song of Mermaid]” and “Nigiyakana Wan ni Seowareta Fune [Lit. The Ship Piggybacked by the Jolly Bay])とエッセイ“(Vietnamese [Lit. The Song of Mermaid])”を2012年2月にベトナム語で出版することを決定したのでした。

That is the reason why we invited Mr. Masatsugu Ono again this year to introduce his ideas and thoughts on his novels and we conducted the press conference and talk by him with Tre Publishing House.

こうして今年もまた小野正嗣さんをお招きし、ご自身の作品に対する思いを語ってもらうため、Tre Publishing Houseと共同で記者会見とトークイベントを開催しました。

The writer was invited to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city to give his talk in the book releasing ceremony. He was very happy to welcome many Vietnamese venerable writers and translators in the ceremony and discussed with him about his career and his novel. Among the VIPs, The VIP attendants include: Mr. Bao Ninh, the winner of Nikkei Asia Prizes for Literature and the author of “The Sorrow of the War”, Mr. Dang Nhat Minh (Film Director), and many other famous writers and critics in Hanoi.

出版記念セレモニーにてご自身の著書についてお話してもらうために、小野さんをHanoi とHo Chi Minh市にお招きしました。小野さんもセレモニーでベトナム人作家や翻訳者と交流を持ててたいへん喜んでいらっしゃいましたし、ご自身のキャリアや作品について積極的に語ってくださいました。VIP招待客には、日経アジア賞受賞者のBao Ninhさんや“The Sorrow of the War”の著者であるDang Nhat Minh（映画監督）など多くの著名な作家や評論家のお姿も見られました。

In Ho Chi Minh city, we had the ceremony happened in the campus of Hoa Sen university then a haft of our audience was students. A lot of discussion were made between audience after Ono’s talk. In which, the most impressive one was from Nhat Chieu sensei, a long-serving Japanese literature researcher. He gave Ono’s book his best comment for myth in the novel “Song of Mermaid”. He stated that the talent of Ono that made that reader think the mysterious details in the novel are as real.

Ho Chi Minh市では、Hoa Sen大学のキャンパスでセレモニーを行ったのですが、参加者の半分は学生さんでした。小野さんのトークの後、小野さんと観客とのディスカッションは大いに盛り上がりました。日本文学研究の第一人者であるNhat Chieu先生からひときわ印象深い言葉が投げかけられました。Chieuさんは小野さんの“Song of Mermaid”という小説に登場する「謎」について高く評価しました。小野さんの才能あふれる表現により、読者は小説に描かれている謎めいた出来事がまるで現実であるかのように感じることができると語ってくれました。

Not only Nhat Chieu sensei, other critics and translators also encouraged the book a lot with their blog writings and newspaper reviews. Mr. Tran Dinh, one of the Vietnamese translator who brought “Underground” of Haruki Murakami to Vietnamese, had two pages in The Thao Van Hoa Weekend magazine about the book, in which he uttered “Masatsugu Ono’s book is not in the stream of global interest and trendy of Japanese modern literature that widely known in Vietnam. It helps Vietnamese readers visit another Japan that they have not yet known before through literature. Without any climax or exaggeration, his novel is dense of tiny stories about the daily life, the neighborhood, the brotherhood, and some mysterious gossips. However, it is his talent to interest readers into his stories.”

Chieu先生だけでなく多くの評論家や翻訳者が、ブログや新聞の書評欄で小野さんの本を高く評価しました。村上春樹さんの作品「アンダーグラウンド」をベトナム語に翻訳したTran Dinhさんは、The Thao Van Hoa Weekend誌で2ページにわたって小野さんの著書について次のように取り上げてくれました。「小野正嗣さんの作品は、ベトナムで広く知られている世界的関心や日本現代文学のトレンドという意味では主流ではない。けれど、ベトナム人読者がまだ知らないもうひとつの日本の姿を文学を通して教えてくれる。これといったクライマックスや誇張表現があるわけではない。彼の作品には、近隣に暮らす人々、兄弟愛、謎めいたゴシップなど濃密な日常の小さな物語が描かれているだけだ。それなのに、読者を物語に引き込むことができることこそが彼の才能だと言えるだろう。」

Receiving such friendly reviews help us more confident in introducing more Japanese writers to Vietnam in order to let Vietnamese readers approach to the variety of Japanese literature.

このような好意的な書評を得ることができ、私たちもより多くの日本人作家をベトナムに紹介し、ベトナム人読者にもっと日本文学に触れてほしいとの思いを強くしました。

Art dolls exhibition in Hanoi 「アートドール：沈黙の語るもの」展

The summer seems to be over in Hanoi and we daily meet with the occasional rain and the temperature gradually becomes cooler here. In this season, a poncho-like-raincoat is a must-have gadget for us, as most of us drift around the city by motorbikes and have to protect ourselves from a sudden autumn rain.

ハノイでは夏がそろそろ終わる気配。毎日にわか雨が降るようになってきて、気温もだんだん下がってきています。ハノイの人たちはオートバイで街中を移動するので、突然の秋の雨から身をまもるためにも、この時期はポンチョスタイルのレインコートが必須アイテムです。

Anyway, even this changeable gloomy weather cannot stop the people to come to our new exhibition entitled “Art Dolls: Silent voices” by Ms. Tran Thu Hang, whose opening was held on 6 September 2011.

This is the very first time for one Vietnamese young artist to exhibit his/her artworks in our exhibition hall. This project is entitled “Young Talent Series”, in which our center aims to provide the opportunity for a young Vietnamese artist to exhibit their collection of artworks in a format of a solo exhibition for the first time in his/her career.

ところで、そんな憂うつなお天気の中でも、たくさんの人たちが「アートドール：沈黙の語るもの」展に来てくれています。この展覧会ではTran Thu Hangさんの作品が展示されていて、2011年9月6日にオープニングセレモニーが開催されました。

ベトナム人若手アーティストの個展がベトナム日本文化交流センターで開催されるのは今回が初めてなんです！このプロジェクトは、「Young Talent Series」というもので、ベトナム人アーティストの卵たちに自分たちの作品を個展というスタイルで、初めて一般に公開するチャンスを提供することを目的としています。

Ms. Hang, who is considered as the first dolls artist in Vietnam, started to make her own dolls since she was a child. After graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Art, she started to focus on making wooden dolls inspired by Japanese dolls which she has one seen in an exhibition. I am very surprised to know that she learned to make the art dolls nowhere. She found the technique by herself and made the dolls with her own imagination.

ベトナム初の人形作家と言われているHangさんは、子どもの時から人形を作っています。ベトナム美術大学を卒業後、かつてある展覧会で見かけた日本人形からインスピレーションを得て、木製の人形を作り始めました。彼女がアートドールの制作をどこかで勉強したわけではないと知ったときはびっくりしてしまいました！自分自身で技術を身につけ、想像力を使って人形を作ってきたのです。

She is skinny but with strong arms. You will be amazed if you can see how she controls a big cutter machine and uses the knives to carve the wooden shapes. I wonder how that skinny hands can be that powerful. In the exhibition, she also made some new art works related to Japanese culture, especially related to our concern on the last tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

ほっそりとしていますが、腕の強さはなかなかのもの。彼女が切削機を使ったり、木を削るのにナイフを使っている姿を見たら、皆さんきっと驚かれますよ。あんなにほっそりとした手がどうやったらあんなにパワフルになるんだろうと思ってしまいます。展覧会では、日本文化に関連した新作、特に3月に日本で発生した津波や地震に関連した新作をいくつか制作してくれました。

In the opening day, we welcomed more than 360 visitors to our center. Most of them are art students and young artists in Hanoi and some are of the artist’s networks. It seems that despite how old we are, we are always attracted by dolls let alone the dolls of Ms.Hang tell us a lot of stories and bring us the nostalgia of childhood. I did visit the exhibition 3 times already and I don’t think I can refuse to see it some more time until the end of the exhibition on 7 October, 2011.

オープニングの日には、360名以上の方が来てくださいました。そのほとんどがハノイの美術学校の学生さんか若手アーティストで、なかにはHangさんのアーティスト仲間の方もいらっしゃいました。いくつになっても人は人形に魅せられるようですね。もちろん、Hangさんの人形たちもたくさんの物語を私たちに語ってくれ、懐かしい子ども時代の記憶を呼び起こしてくれます。私はもう3回も展覧会に足を運んでいます。展覧会が終了する2011年10月7日までにあと何回かは行っちゃいそうです。

“Toy boxes”, the one amazes visitors describing a baby victim in the tsunami and earthquake.

The exhibition runs until 7 October, 2011 and I hope the number of the visitors will break the record of the biggest number of the visitors in our exhibition hall.

展覧会は2011年10月7日まで開催されます。たくさんの方が訪れてくれて、ベトナム日本文化交流センターの展覧会ホールの来場者数記録を更新してくれることを期待しています！

OK, let’s begin my turn.

You might raise your eyebrows slightly, but Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, has four seasons, while Ho Chi Minh City in the southern part enjoys only two seasons (dry and rain seasons). So we, Hanoian, are always facing with chilly cold winter in January and February every year. But now Hanoi is reaching to the burning summer season, just after enjoying the brief warm spring. The school year ended in early June, and some of students went back their hometown for long summer holidays.

では、始めま～す。

意外かもしれませんが、ベトナムの首都ハノイには、四季があります。ちなみに、南部のホーチミンでは、乾季、雨季の2つの季節しかありません。ハノイの人たちは、1月2月には底冷えのする寒い冬を過ごします。短い春を終え、ハノイは猛暑の季節を迎えつつあります。学校は毎年6月に終了するので、長い夏休み期間中、地元に戻る学生もいます。

Just before starting the long summer holidays, we organized a large scale of an exhibition, “Manga Realities: Exploring the Art of Japanese comics today” from May to June 2011 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

Some of you might not know that Japanese Manga is very popular in Vietnam. From Doraemon, Vietnamese readers gradually get to know about Japanese Manga and now become crazy with. Doraemon was started publishing in the end of 1992 and then be continuously re-printed until now. Besides, Detective Konan, Dragon Balls and Jack Black are also popular among fans of Japanese Manga in Vietnam.

長い夏休みが始まる直前には、「新次元　マンガ表現の現在」展という大規模な展覧会を5月から6月にかけてベトナム国立美術館で開催しました。

ベトナムでは日本の漫画が大人気だということを知っていますか？ドラえもんに始まり、ベトナムの漫画ファンたちは日本の漫画について少しずつ慣れ親しんできて、今や夢中になっています。ドラえもんは1992年の終わりごろに出版され、現在までくり返し出版されていますしね。他には、名探偵コナン、ドラゴンボール、ブラックジャックによろしくなどがベトナムの漫画ファンの間では人気です。

It could be said that Manga Exhibition was the toughest exhibition that I have ever carried out. The exhibition occupied 400 square meters of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, using not only the first floor but also the second floor. In a Japanese or foreign sense, you might feel it is rather small, but it is a very rare case in Vietnam to handle this scale of an exhibition, due to lack of the suitable space and sufficient budget.

It took 6 days for us to finish the installation, with the help of enthusiastic Vietnamese art students, supervised by Ms. Takahashi Mizuki (Exhibition curator) and Mr. Toyoshima Hideki (Exhibition designer).

We welcomed 342 in the opening ceremony and it was unbelievable that after 29 days, we got 10,637 visitors to the exhibition. The exhibition this time was also equipped with two lectures, one as mentioned above of Ms. Takahashi and one from Mr. Kusumi Kiyoshi (Art Critic & Associate Professor, Tokyo Metropolitan University) titled “Manga into Art”, and piano concerts in “Nodame Cantabile” exhibition space every Saturday and Sunday during the exhibition. The exhibition guidebook and exhibition catalogue were translated into Vietnamese to distribute to the visitors.

Personally I think, the visitors who came to the exhibition can be divided into two types. Those who love manga and those who are curious about how manga can be in an art form exhibition. Most of the viewers said this exhibition was really impressive. On the other hand, some of students of fine art school still hesitated to confess that Manga is an art. Even Mr.Tran Luong, one Vietnamese curator, told me that Manga could be a target to study but cannot be considered as an art form similarly as Fine Arts and Literature. Anyway, the most important thing that I personally sum up is that this exhibition helped to raise a question that most of fans of manga in Vietnam might not have ever thought about. It is “Is Manga an art?”

今回のマンガ展は、私が実施に携わった展覧会の中でも最もタフなものだったかもしれません。ベトナム国立美術館の1階2階を利用し、400平米のスペースを使って開催されました。日本や他の国では規模が小さいと思われるかもしれませんが、ベトナムではスペース不足や十分な予算がないために、この規模の展覧会が実施されるのはとっても珍しいことなんです。

展覧会キュレーターの高橋瑞木さん、展覧会デザイナーの豊嶋秀樹さんの指導のもとで、ベトナム人美大生に手伝ってもらい、準備に6日間かかりました。

オープニングセレモニーでは342名の来訪者を迎え、信じられないことですが、29日後には来訪者は10,637人にもなりました。今回の展覧会では、2つの講座も開催されました。1つは上でも触れました高橋瑞木さんによるもので、もう1つは楠見清さん（美術評論家）の「マンガがアートになる日」と題した講座でした。会期中、「のだめカンタービレ」の展示スペースを利用して毎週末ピアノコンサートも開催されました。展覧会のガイドブックやカタログもベトナム語に翻訳され、来訪者に配られました。

個人的に思うに、展覧会の来訪者は2つのタイプに分かれているようでした。マンガファンの人たちと、マンガがどうやって芸術という枠に収まるのか興味津々という人たちです。たくさんの人たちに展覧会とってもよかったよと言ってもらえました。一方では、マンガを芸術と呼ぶことにまだまだ抵抗があるという美術学校の学生さんたちもいました。ベトナム人キュレーターのTran Luongさんでさえ、マンガも学ぶ価値はあるかもしれないが、芸術や文学のように芸術分野には当てはまらないと言っていました。何はともあれ、いちばん大切なことは、ベトナムのマンガファンの多くが今まで考えたこともなかった質問を投げかけたということです。それは「マンガってアートなの？」という質問です。

It is lucky for me that this summer in Hanoi, the weather is rather comfortable with the summer rain. Otherwise I might be exhausted with Naoki Iimuro performance in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi just 5 days before the closing of Manga Exhibition.

ハノイの今年の夏は雨も降り、比較的過ごしやすいお天気でラッキーです。そうでないと、マンガ展が終了する5日前にホーチミンとハノイで開催された、いいむろなおきさんのパフォーマンスショーでへたばっていたかもしれません。

It is better to remind all of you about Naoki Iimuro performance in Hanoi last year with my last post: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/japanfoundation/20100803/p1. Naoki Iimuro is Japanese pantomime artist. He usually implements solo mime performance with many short separated episodes which were created and acted by the artist himself. After the performances last year, we received many requests from the audience to invite him again to Vietnam. For this year, not only in Hanoi, we also brought Naoki Iimuro to Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city in the southern of Vietnam. Naoki Iimuro’s performances were implemented in the stage within the campus area of Ho Chi Minh Stage and Cinema University. Though this is the first time for this performance in Ho Chi Minh City, we had 342 audiences for the first night and 378 audiences for the second night. Actually there are 318 seats only in the theater but some audiences were still happy to stand just for enjoy the performance.

For the performance in Hanoi after that, the two performances were packed with more than 1300 audiences in two nights. Not only adults but children were also attracted by Naoki Iimuro’s performance. There were many children audiences in Hanoi and during the performance and they sometimes imitated the action on the stage. I myself is one of his fan. I am always impressed by his performances regardless old or new episodes. Ms. Khanh Linh, the singer who participated in the Cultural Leader Invitation program of Japan Foundation in 2010, expressed her feeling with a journal on Tuoi Tre Online Newspaper (Tuoi Tre is one of the most popular media channels in Vietnam) that Naoki Iimuro with his body movements can inspire the audience with stories about the boundless universe.

ハノイで昨年開催されたいいむろなおきさんのパフォーマンスショーについて書いた私の書き込み（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/japanfoundation/20100803/p1.）をもう一度見てみてください。いいむろなおきさんは日本人パントマイムアーティストです。いいむろさんは普段は短く構成された自作自演のパントマイムをソロでされています。昨年のショー以来、ベトナムにもう一度いいむろさんを招待してほしいという声をたくさん頂きました。というわけで、今年はハノイだけでなくベトナム最大の都市 ホーチミンへもいいむろさんをご招待しました。今回のパフォーマンスはホーチミン舞台映画大学のキャンパスのステージで行われ、一夜目は342名、二夜目は378名の方々が見に来てくれました。会場には実際318席しかなかったのですが、それでもみなさん立ち見で楽しんでくれました。

ハノイでは2日間に渡って1300名以上の人たちを前に2度のパフォーマンスが行われました。大人も子供もいいむろさんのパフォーマンスを楽しんでくれたようです。ハノイではたくさんの子供たちも見に来てくれ、ステージ上のいいむろさんの動きを真似っこしたりしていました。実は私もファンの一人なんです。新作であってもおなじみの作品であっても彼のパフォーマンスにはいつも感動してしまいます。2010年度の国際交流基金の文化人招へいプログラムに参加した歌手のKhanh LinhさんもTuoi Tre Online Newspaper（ベトナムで最も人気があるメディアチャンネルのひとつ）で、「いいむろさんのパフォーマンスは無限のストーリーを観客に語ってくれた」と感想を寄せてくれました。

This year, Naoki Iimuro has also performed in Manila under the invitation of Japan Foundation. What a pity that there is no blog staff from Manila to tell us how it is.

FUROSHIKI DESIGN CONTEST FOR STUDENT AWARDING CEREMONY学生のためのふろしきデザインコンテスト

Hello everyone, this is Nha from Hanoi. Yes, Mio-san, time passes so fast. I cannot imagine that it was one month ago when I was enjoying my Tet holidays (Vietnamese new year holidays) at my home town in Hue. Fuki-san, as you might know, we celebrate a new year with lunar calendar, not with the Western calendar. This year the first day of a new year fell on 3rd February. I enjoyed the re-union of my family members at my home town, and ate a lot of foods for a new year.

こんにちは、ハノイのNhaです！ほんとに時間が経つのは早いですよね、mioさん！ 私の地元フエでテトのお休み(ベトナムの正月休み)を楽しんでいたのが、もう1カ月前のことだなんて信じられないわ。Fukiさん、ベトナムでは新年を西暦ではなく陰暦でお祝いするんですよ。 今年は新年の初日は2月3日で、家族と再会して、美味しいものをたくさん食べたわ！

My new year begun with wonderful news from Japan. In the 2nd International Furoshiki Design Contest for Students, 5 Vietnamese students (4 designs) won the prizes, including the Grand Prize.
私の新年は、日本からの素敵な知らせで始まりました。第2回学生のための国際ふろしきデザインコンテスト*1で、最優秀賞も含め5人のベトナム人の学生(4つのデザイン)が受賞しました！




We then organized the awarding ceremony for the students at the yard of our center on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Furoshiki Exhibition. The awarding ceremony received quite high attention from Vietnamese media and general public, and over 100 guests, including television crew and news reporters witnessed the ceremony, as well as the interviews with the prize winners.

ベトナム日本文化交流センターでは、ふろしき展覧会のオープニングセレモニーにあわせて表彰式を行ないました。表彰式はベトナムのテレビをはじめとするメディア関係者や一般の方々など100人以上のお客様が来てくださり、受賞者インタビューも行なわれました。

Ms. Trang, the Grand Prize winner from Hue (same with my home town!), said “Thanks to the Japan Foundation for organizing this contest for students who love to experience in the art of design and Japanese culture. I have never thought that I would get the top prize. I will use the award money for the tuition of my Master course in Thailand.”

The awarded students shared the happiness of winnings, and exchanged their Furoshiki one by one, before going back to their own home towns. I think that this design contest not only connected the two cultures but also connected fine arts students from different cities. I hope this contest will be continuously held to encourage students to challenge themselves in an international scene.

最優秀賞受賞のTrangさん（私と同じフエ出身！）は、「日本文化のアートデザインを経験したいと思っている学生にとっては、とっても素敵なコンテストだと思います。企画してくれた国際交流基金には感謝しています。まさか自分が優勝するなんて思ってもいませんでしたが、賞金はタイでの大学院費用に充てるつもりです。」と話してくれました。それぞれが地元に帰る前に、受賞者同士が自分のデザインしたふろしきを交換する様子は、このデザインコンテストによって、２つの文化が結び付けられただけでなく異なった都市で勉強する美術の学生同士も結びつけられたのだと、思わせてくれました。このコンテストが引き続き開催されて、学生たちが国際舞台で挑戦するきっかけとなれば良いですよね。



Next is a report on a big event before the Tet holidays.

In the middle of January 2011, our center co-hosted the Japanese Animation Film Festival (JAFF) “Discover the Excitement of Japanese Animation” in Hanoi.

それから、テトのお休み前にあった大きなイベントをもう1つ紹介します。今年の1月半ば、私達ベトナム日本文化交流センターは、ハノイで行なわれた文化庁主催の日本アニメ映画際（JAFF）「”Discover the Excitement of Japanese Animation”（発見！日本アニメーションの魅力）」を共催で行ないました。

Japanese animation is quite popular in Vietnam as well. Such animations as Doraemon, Detective Conan and Pokemon are widely recognized and admired by a plethora of teenagers. However, this time our aim to organize the animation film festival was to introduce the diversity of Japanese feature animation films to Vietnam. So we were not sure how degree we would get attention from the public for such unknown films for Vietnamese.

However, we found that it was imaginary fear when we opened the ticket distribution booth at our center. Or even surprisingly, the reaction from the public was over our expectation. On the very first day, our center was packed with over 1,000 people who came to pick up the tickets for the animation film festival. Not only the legendary famous animation “Spirited Away” by Hayao Miyazaki, the tickets for all of the other 7 films as well as one mini live by a voice actress were distributed out within two days.
日本のアニメーションはベトナムでもかなり人気があります。ドラえもん、名探偵コナン、それからポケモンといったアニメは、10代の若者の間でとっても流行ってるんですよ。そこで今回のこの日本アニメ映画祭の目的は、日本のアニメ映画の多様性を広くベトナムに紹介することとしました。 ですので、あまり知られていない日本のアニメがベトナムの人々にどのくらい受け入れられるのか分かりませんでした。でも、その心配は当センターでチケット配布を開始した瞬間に、必要なかったことが分かりました。しかも驚いたのは、みんなの反応が期待以上で、チケットを求めて来た人は初日だけで1,000人を超えていたのです。かの有名な宮崎駿監督の『千と千尋の神隠し』はもちろん、その他の7作品*2と、声優さんのミニライブも含めて、たったの2日であっという間に配布終了しました。

This means that the combination of the words, “Japan” and “Animation” itself has enough attractiveness to trigger the attention from the public. This is exactly what Joseph Nye called “Soft Power,” I thought.

「日本」と「アニメーション」という単語の組み合わせが、こんなに多くの人々の注目を集めることができるほどの魅力があることを表していると感じました。これが、まさにジョゼフ・ナイ教授が「ソフト・パワー」と呼んだものではないでしょうか。



On the opening screening day, all the 470 seats were full. A lot of audience came to see the “Colorful” directed by Keiichi Hara, including the vice director of Vietnam Cinema Commission, Mr. Huynh Vinh Son, an animator and one of the Cultural Leaders Invitation Program participants, Ms. Phuong Linh & Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, visual artists from Nha San Duc, to name the few. It turned out that Ms. Phuong Linh is a fan of Keiichi Hara. When the movie was finished, Ms. Phuong Linh, Ms. Linh Dung (one of the member of Dai Lam Linh group, a famous experimental music group in Vietnam) were bursting into tears. They said the movie was so moving and it was so talented for the director to send a valuable and lively message via an animation movie. It seems that this movie changed the mind of many Vietnamese audiences that animation movies are only for children but also for adults.

初日公開日は、全470席が満席でした。原恵一監督の『カラフル』を観に来ていたお客さんの中には、ベトナムシネマ委員会の副委員長、アニメ監督であり昨年度の文化人招へいプログラムで訪日したHuynh Vinh Sonさん、Nha San DucコンテンポラリーアートスタジオからアーティストのPhuong LinhさんとNguyen Manh Hungさんもいらっしゃっていました。Phuong Linhさんは原監督のファンだったのですね。映画が終わったとき、Phuong LinhさんとLinh Dung (Dai Lam Linhというベトナムで有名な実験音楽グループのメンバーのひとり)は涙が止まらないほど感動した、アニメ映画を通じて価値ある活き活きとしたメッセージを発したこの監督の力量に感じ入ったとお話されました。この作品がベトナムの人々が持っている「アニメは子どものためのもの」という一般的な考えを「大人のためでもある」という考えに変えたかもしれません。

From the questionnaires, I found that “Spirited Away” by Hayao Miyazaki & “Summer Wars” by Mamoru Hosoda received the highest scores in satisfaction and comments, while I myself became a big fan of “Mai Mai Miracle” by Sunao Katabuchi. Coincidently Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, a performance artist who participated in JENESYS creator program, also told me that “Mai Mai Miracle” was most impressive for him and it reminded him of his childhood memory.

来場者アンケートからは、宮崎駿監督の『千と千尋の神隠し』と細田守監督の『サマーウォーズ』が最も高評価だったようですが、私個人的には、片淵須直監督の『マイマイ新子と千年の魔法』がとっても好きでした。ちょうど、Nguyen Anh Tuanさん(JENESYSクリエイタープログラムにも参加した現代美術アーティスト)も同じように、その映画が最も印象的で小さい頃の記憶を思い出されたとお話してくれました。

In total, the JAFF welcomed 3075 audiences with 16 screenings and one mini talk and live shows of the voice actress Mitsuki Saiga.

期間中、この映画祭JAFFでは、16回にわたる作品の上映と声優の斎賀みつきさんのミニトーク＆ライブショー（ベトナムで声優を紹介する初めての試みでした！）が行なわれ3,075人もの観客動員数があったようです。

The talk and mini live show by Mitsuki Saiga is also worthy to mention here, as it was the first attempt to introduce a voice actress to Vietnam.

Mitsuki Saiga, the Japanese voice actress holding the Overseas Fan’s Choice Awards at the Seiyu (voice actor/actress) Awards 2010, came to Vietnam to talk about her career as a voice actress, and sang her songs as Mitsuki Saiga feat. JUST with the guitarist Kazuya Nishikawa. Though this program was held only in Hanoi, there were Vietnamese fans from the other cities including Ho Chi Minh City. They came to Hanoi just to meet with Saiga, joining in Saiga-san’s talk show and expressed their admiration on Saiga-san’s voice. They said they were very excited to meet Saiga-san in person and hoped those kind of activities would be organized in Ho Chi Minh City in the future.

斎賀みつきさんは、声優アワード2010で海外ファン賞を受賞した日本人の声優さんですが、ベトナムに来て、ご自身について語っただけでなく、斎賀みつき feat.JUST　でギタリストの西川和也さんと共に歌を披露されました。今回の会場はハノイでしたが、ホーチミンやその他の都市からも多くの観客が斎賀さんの姿を見、声を聞きにやって来ていて、こういった催しのホーチミンでの開催も望んでいるようでした。
