It’s been a while since my last entry, welcome to all the new members of this international community!

みなさんこんにちは！

前回の投稿からご無沙汰していましたが、新たにこのブログを読み始めて下さっている皆様、改めて、ようこそ「地球を、開けよう」へ！


Rome is starting to be cold and the 50th anniversary of the Japan Cultural Institute is approaching. It will be in December, and lots of events are soon to be scheduled for next year.

ローマは、寒くなり始め、12月のローマ日本文化会館の50周年記念日もいよいよ近づいています。来年は、たくさんの記念イベントを開催する予定です。




Meanwhile, a couple of very interesting and successful nights have been held here.

A very famous Ikebana Master Instructor took part in a wonderful conference/demonstration last October 5th. Mrs. Koka Fukushima came here to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ranson Study Group, the Italian branch of the Japanese Ikebana Sogetsu School.

さて、先月のローマ日本文化会館は、面白いイベントをいくつか開催しました。まず一つ目、草月流ランソン・スタディ・グループ創立25周年を記念して10月5日に行われた、華道家、福島光加氏による生け花カンファレンス／デモンストレーションは、大変な盛り上がりを見せました。




Ikebana is one of the most appreciated Japanese traditional arts, well-known in Italy as well, and with a lot of supporters and amateurs. The peculiarity of Sogetsu School, one of the many different schools of Ikebana, is the great modernity and the attention paid to the materials. The founder, Sofu Teshigahara, with his revolutionary approach, had broken traditional ties with his contributions to the world of ikebana.

生け花は、今もなお語り継がれる日本を代表する伝統文化・美術のひとつです。イタリアでもたくさんの人々に親しまれ、多くのサポーターや、アマチュア華道家もいます。草月流は、素材ひとつひとつへのきめ細やかな注力、そして非常に現代的な作風が特徴です。創立者の勅使河原蒼風氏の革命的なアプローチは、伝統を更に進化させ、生け花界に大きく貢献しました。




The conference was a celebration of the Italian Ranson Study Group, founded in 1987 by Master Lina Alicino. As a special guest, Mrs. Koka Fukushima enchanted the audience making wonderful ikebana compositions and talking about her method and experience.

このカンファレンスは、Lina Alicino氏により1987年に創立されたランソン・スタディ・グループの25周年の記念イベントとして行われました。スペシャルゲストの福島光加氏による生け花デモンストレーションは、観客をあっという間に魅了し、また、彼女独自の生け花術、ご経験談など貴重なお話を伺うこともできました。

Two weeks later an old friend of the Institute came along with two fellow musicians to give an amazing concert. We had the privilege to have the great jazz pianist and composer Makoto Kuriya as our guest for the third time, together with Keisuke Torigoe (doublebass) and Hiroki Murakami (drums). The concert was held on the occasion of the European tour “Makoto Kuriya Piano Trio” and was a great success.

その二週間後、ゲストとしてお呼びするのは三回目になるクリヤ・マコト氏（ジャズピアニスト・作曲家）が、今回は二人の音楽家、鳥越啓介氏（コントラバス）と村上広樹氏（ドラム）と共に、素晴らしいコンサートを開きました。コンサートは”Makoto Kuriya Piano Trio”ヨーロッパツアーのローマ公演として行われ、大盛況のうちに終了しました。

The next scheduled events are a conference about humanoid robots developed in Japan and the concert of Tadashi Tajima, a famous shakuhachi player.

次回、ここローマで予定されているイベントは、日本で開発されたヒューマノイドロボットについてのレクチャー／デモンストレーションイベントと、著名な尺八奏者、田嶋直士氏によるコンサートです。

Old Meets New 新旧アーティストの交差点

It’s been a while since my last entry in this blog!

Spring is coming in a few days, honestly I can’t wait for it. Winter in Rome has been tough this year, we have even seen the SNOW!! It never happens!! Well, it lasted a couple of days but still... amazing!

みなさん、こんにちは！

前回のブログからご無沙汰していました～！

春はもうそこまでやって来ています。もう待てない！というのが本音でしょうか。ローマの今年の冬の寒さは厳しかった・・・。雪も降ったんですよ！！そんなこと今までなかったのに！！雪は2、3日しか続かなかったのですが、今でも驚きです！雪に覆われた日本文化文化会館の様子をご覧ください！

I’m going to report about a couple of events held here at the Institute in the last months.

In January we had the pleasure to hosting Michiko Nojiri Sensei for a conference on the “Chado”, the Tea Ceremony.

Nojiri Sensei is living in Rome since 50 years and during this long time she has been one of the greatest Japanese personalities in Italy. She is the founder and director of the Urasenke Center in Rome that represents the Japanese traditional culture abroad. After the lecture, based on her personal travelling experience in Europe, Nojiri Sensei gave a demonstration of Chado, to show the power of non-verbal communication.

最近の日本文化会館でのイベントを報告しますね。1月には、Michiko Nojiri先生をお招きして「茶道」のイベントを開催しました。Nojiri先生は50年もの長い間ローマにご在住で、イタリアでは著名な日本人です。先生は裏千家ローマ出張所の創始者であり、所長で、日本の伝統文化である茶道を海外に紹介する活動をしています。ご自身のヨーロッパにおける体験をもとに講演をされた後、Nojiri先生は茶道のデモンストレーションをされ、言葉を使わないコミュニケーションの力を示してくださいました。

It was a really moving lecture, I think it’s a big honor having the chance to listen to a person with such an awesome life, spent carrying on the tradition of the Chado among the European cultural movements.

In February we hosted a wonderful classic concert, starring a ridiculously young violinist, the 16 years old Kazuhito Yamane. This extremely talented boy played for more than an hour accompanied by the also young pianist Tomoaki Yoshida (but he’s 28, very old if compared to Yamane!).

The audience had a totally enthusiastic reaction, not only for the skill of the two musicians but also for their nice attitude 

先生の講演は本当にすばらしい講演でした。ヨーロッパ文化の中にあって、茶道の伝統を維持することに人生を捧げている先生のような方のお話を聞く機会を得られたことは、私にとってとても光栄なことでした。

2月には弱冠16歳のヴァイオリニスト Kazuhito Yamaneさんをお招きして、クラシックコンサートを開催しました。この才能溢れる少年は、同じく若手（といっても28歳なので、Yamaneさんに比べると年を取っていますが！）のピアニストTomoaki Yoshidaさんの伴奏で1時間以上ヴァイオリンを演奏しました。観客の皆さんは、お二人の演奏技術はもちろんのこと、その振る舞いの良さにも熱狂的な賞賛を送っていました。

It’s a quite weird sensation being able to compare a Chado Sensei with her long life filled with experience and stories to tell, with such a young violin Sensei, that in spite of his age shows an incredible maturity and a very professional ability.

In March the Institute is being monopolized by the first anniversary of the terrible Tohoku Earthquake of 2011, we will hold a couple of conferences and a photographic exhibition to remember.

Time flies, already a year, unbelievable.

人生経験豊かな茶道の先生と、年齢的には若いにも関わらず、成熟とプロフェッショナルな技術を兼ね備えた若きヴァイオリニストを比較する機会を得たことは、なんとも不思議な体験でした。

3月には、2011年の東日本大震災から1年を迎えたことを記念したイベントが、ローマ日本文化会館にて目白押しです。震災の記憶を留めておくために、セミナーや写真展などを開催する予定です。あれから1年、時が経つのは早いものですね。信じられない思いです。

Music beyond Borderline 音楽はボーダーラインを越えて

Hello everybody! Christmas is coming OH! OH! OH!

Rome is extremely COLD right now, although here it never snows (I wonder how many degrees there are in Moscow... and in Sydney?!)

Today it's my last working day before Christmas and お正月 holidays, I'll be back at my desk on January 4th. YAY!

Before leaving I'd like to share some picture with you, they're from the concert held here on December 7th.

The event, called BORDERLINE, was a cross-over between contemporary music and Noh Theatre, with the involvement of the Italian band Alter Ego (flute and two clarinets) and the Noh performer Ryoko Aoki. It was really a "borderline show" but the audience (around 120 people) had an enthusiastic reaction.

みなさん、こんにちは！クリスマスがやってくる～♪Ｏｈ！Ｏｈ！Ｏｈ！

ローマは今と～っても寒いです。雪まではさすがに降りませんが・・・。（モスクワやシドニーではいったい何度なんでしょうか？）

今日は年末年始の休暇の前の最後の出勤日です。仕事始めは1月4日です。Ｙａｙ！

休暇に入る前に、12月7日にローマ日本文化会館で開催されたコンサートの写真を何枚かご紹介しますね。

「BORDERLINE」というタイトルがつけられたこのイベントは、イタリアのバンドAlter Ego（フルートとクラリネットデュオ）と能楽師 青木涼子さんによる現代音楽と能謡の音楽のボーダーラインを越えたコンサートでした。それはまさに「ボーダーラインを越えたパフォーマンス」で、約120名の観客は熱狂的な反応をしていましたよ～。

This month we had also a couple of visits from a senior high school and a junior high. The kids came to see the exhibition (the one I wrote about in my previous entry) and had a lot of fun making origami with my colleague Daniela. I took one picture but I have to put a black "mask" on the faces because of privacy laws. Here it is.

今月は中高生のゲストも何人かお迎えしました。生徒さんたちは展覧会（前回のブログで私がご紹介したものです）を見に来て、私の同僚のDanielaと折り紙を楽しそうに折っていましたよ～。写真を撮ったんですが、プライバシー保護のために顔に黒い「マスク」をつけています＾＾；

And that's all folks, sorry for the short entry but I have to finish some work before going to vacation.

I leave you a picture of the traditional Italian Christmas dessert. It's called PANETTONE and is a kind of sweet soft bread filled with raisins and candied fruit. It's DELICIOUS!

今日はここまでです。短くてごめんなさい。休暇に入る前にもう少しお仕事を片付けなくっちゃ・・・。こちらは伝統的なイタリアのクリスマスデザートです。PANETTONEというもので、レーズンと砂糖漬けのフルーツがたくさん入っている甘くて柔らかいパンのようなものです。おいしいですよ～！

Old-fashioned Photo Exhibition レトロな写真はお好き？

Hello everyone!

Like Egypt, Italy is getting cooler as well. Rome is starting to get covered with dead leaves and sometimes rainstorms wash away everything. チョーめんどくさい。

I’m really jealous of the wonderful J-POP Salon opened in Cairo, I’m a manga lover and would be great if a similar event could be held here in Rome. Many compliments to Aki san!

No manga for me here at Istituto Giapponese, but an equally awesome photo exhibition called “Metamorphosis of Japan After the War”, the work of 11 photographers who captured images of postwar Japan from 1945 to 1964.

みなさん、こんにちは！

エジプトと同じように、ここイタリアもだんだん涼しくなってきていますよ～。ローマはそろそろ街が枯れ葉で埋めつくされる季節で、時々やってくる激しい雨風に何もかも洗い流されてしまうことがあるんですよ・・・。チョーめんどくさい。

カイロで新設されたJ-POPサロン、ステキ！うらやましいな～。私はマンガの大ファンなので、ローマでも同じようなイベントがあればいいのになぁと本気で思っちゃいます。Akiさんグッドアイデアですね！

ローマ日本文化会館ではマンガはありませんが、同じくらいイケてる「戦後日本の変容」展という写真展を開催しています。1945年から1964年にかけての戦後の日本の様子を捉えた11人のフォトグラファーの作品が展示されています。

In my personal opinion I find very fascinating this old-fashioned style of photography, with real black&white (not the “fake one” made up using photoshop), real photographic film and no image editing at all. Isn’it incredible? There was an era without photoshop and digital cameras! We should always remember this, and pictures like these will appear in all their magnificence.

Yesterday another big event promoted by the Institute took place in Rome, at beautiful Teatro Olimpico.

It was the RYUKYU DANCE & MUSIC, a gorgeous performance of traditional music and dance from Ryukyu Islands, former name of Okinawa.

Among the dancers and musicians were included several "Living National Treasures of Japan" in performing arts and for sure the show was something unforgettable.

photoshopで作成された「にせもの」ではないオールドファッションなモノクロ写真は、個人的にとってもすばらしいと思います。本物の写真用フィルムで、画像編集はいっさいされていません。信じられないですよね？photoshopやデジタルカメラがなかった時代があったなんて！そんな時代があったことを私たちは忘れてはならないし、そうやって撮影された写真はすべて壮麗さを感じさせるものとなっています。

ローマ日本文化会館が主催したもうひとつのビッグイベントが美しいテアトロ・オリンピコにて昨日開催されました。その名も「琉球伝統芸能 ローマ公演」というイベントで、琉球（現在の沖縄県）の伝統芸能である古典音楽・舞踊の見た目にも豪華なパフォーマンスが展開されました。踊り手や演奏家の中には、日本の芸能部門の「人間国宝」もいて、この公演が観客にとって忘れられないものとなったことは間違いないでしょう。

Isn'it great?! The audience was totally fascinated, it was a big success.

Last, but not least, I had the chance to watch the latest Ghibli movie at Rome Film Festival last week.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki (Hayao's son), is called "From up on Poppy Hill" (コクリコ坂から) and it's very nice!

The plot is about a young girl in 1963, fighting with her classmates to save from demolition an old building used as a base for all the school clubs.

Of course romance and troubles are involved in the story, one of the best latest Ghibli in my opinion! Strongly recommended!

すごくないですか？観客は完全に魅了されていました。イベントは大成功のうちに幕を閉じました。

最後にもう一つ重要なイベントをご紹介します。私は先週開催されたローマ映画祭で、最新のジブリ映画を観ることができました。宮崎吾朗（宮崎駿監督のご子息）監督作品、「コクリコ坂から」という映画で、とってもよかったです！

ストーリーは、1963年という時代設定で、ある少女がクラスメートと共に学校のクラブ活動の活動場所として利用している古い建物が取り壊されそうになっているのを防ぐために奮闘するというものです。もちろん、ロマンスやハプニングもありますよ。個人的には最近のジブリ作品の中でも最もいい映画の一つと言ってもいいくらいよかったです！ぜひぜひご覧くださ～い！

Ciao da Roma! ローマからこんにちは！

Hello everybody! はじめまして！ This is Federica from Rome writing my very first entry in this blog! I'm very excited to start this experience and first of all I wanna send a big ありがとう！ to Mio san, for her kind support!

I've been working at Rome Japan Cultural Institute since September 2010, as a member of the cultural office staff and I’m in charge for various activities, such as patronages, database administration, and conferences.

はじめまして！ローマのFedericaです。今回初めてブログに書き込みます！ブログに参加することになってとってもワクワクしています♪まずはいろいろと親切にサポートしてくれたMioさんにありがとう！とお礼を言いたいです。

私は2010年9月にローマ日本文化会館で働き始めました。日本文化会館の職員として、イベント後援関連、データベース管理、会議調整などなどを担当しています。

Unfortunately I don’t have much to say right now, because in July-August the Institute is on summer break with no activities.

The atmosphere is very quiet and the familiar sound of cicadas echoes all around. I love summer.

残念ながら、ローマ日本文化会館は7月8月は夏休み中のため、イベントらしいイベントもなく、そんなに書くネタがないのです。夏休み中はとても静かで、辺りには蝉の鳴き声が響いています。私はそんな夏が大好き！

In September an exhibition about Japanese gardens will be held at the Institute, and here you can see some pictures of the setting.

日本庭園がテーマの展覧会が日本文化会館で9月に開催される予定で、その準備の様子を撮った写真がこちらです↓

Gardening is one of the most popular aspects of the Japanese culture, a lot of people calls to visit the garden of the Institute, that will be opened from next October 1st for one month (usually the visits are held during October and April-May).

Last spring another Association in Italy (near Milan) borrowed the same exhibition from us and was a great success.

日本庭園は日本文化の中でも特に人気があり、たくさんの人たちから日本文化会館の庭を見学したいとのお声があり、10月1日から1ヶ月間、一般公開されます（通常は10月と4月～5月にかけて公開されます）。

昨年春には、ある団体が今回の展覧会と同じ内容の展示物を利用して、イタリア・ミラノ近郊で展覧会を開催し、大成功でした！

By the way, at the moment the Institute is 工事中 because next year will be the 50th anniversary of its foundation and a lot of events are in program.

Taking advantage of the summer break, we are renovating the concert hall (above all the air conditioning system) and here's how the hall looks like right now...

ところで、日本文化会館はただいま工事中なんです。というのも、来年は創立50周年の年で、たくさんのイベントが計画されています。

夏休みを利用して、コンサートホール、特にその空調設備を改修中です。現在のホールの様子はこんな感じです↓

Hopefully in September everything will be ok!

9月までにすべての工事が無事に済んでくれたらいいな～！

Here in Rome is really hot, summer is coming!

Unfortunately this will be my last post on the blog. I was really glad to be part of the blog staff ! Hope you enjoyed my posts during this year.

ここローマはとっても暑い・・・。夏はもうそこまで来てます！

残念ながら、今回が私の最後の書き込みになってしまいました。ブログメンバーになれて本当に嬉しかったです。私のブログ、皆さん今まで楽しんでくれましたか？

In occasion of my last post, I want to write about the photo exhibition held at the institute “I patrimoni Unesco in Giappone". It is about the Japanese World Heritages. There are 63 pictures of Kazuyoshi Miyoshi, a selection of the work Nihonsekaiisan published in Japan in 1998. As you may know he received in 1985 the award Kimurahei for the work Rakusen.

He has been travelling a lot around the world. From Okinawa to Maldive, from Tahiti to Africa. During his trip he took pictures of the best natural paradises of the world. At the moment 14 of the 911 properties of World Heritages are Japanese. This exhibition conquered the heart of many people that came to visit us, most of the guest complimented to us and really liked it!

There are wonderful images of Ninnaji of Kyoto, the mounts of ShirakamiSanchi, Gokayama, the peninsula of Shirekoto, the golden Pavillion of Kyoto..etc.

最後に、ローマ日本文化会館で開催中の「日本の世界遺産」という写真展について書きます。この展覧会は、日本の世界遺産についての写真展です。1998年に日本で出版された「日本の世界遺産」の中から選ばれた三好和義さんの63作品が展示されています。

みなさん知ってますか？三好さんは1985年に写真集「RAKUEN」で木村伊兵衛賞を受賞しました。

三好さんは、沖縄からモルディブ、タヒチからアフリカまで、世界中を旅したみたいで、その旅の途中、世界中の自然の楽園をカメラに収めたようです。現在911箇所ある世界遺産のうち14箇所が日本で登録されています。写真展の来場者の方々は、みんなとても感動され、とっても好評です！

京都仁和寺、白神山地、五箇山、知床岬、京都金閣寺などなど…どれもすばらしい写真ですよ～

About the school activity. This week the closing ceremony of the academic year of the Japanese courses will be held. There will be also presented the best students of the Japanese courses that will win an award.

Every year the people that want to attend our Japanese language courses are increasing. For this reason we introduce also some summer courses. Since Italian schools are closed in July many young people have free time.

Dewa, even if I won’t write no more for the blog, I will follow you as a reader!

それから、今週は日本語講座の終業式もあります。そこでは、日本語講座の最優秀学生賞の受賞者が発表されます！会館の日本語講座を受講したいという人は年々どんどん増えています。それで今年からは夏期講座を開催します。イタリアの学校は7月中はお休みなので、若い人は時間に余裕がありますからね。

では、ブログを書くことはなくなっても、これからは読者として参加しますね！

Good morning to you all!

Rome is spring too!

Mio san, I’m glad to hear that everybody in the office of Tokyo is fine. Fuki san the strawberry daifuku seems delicious!

Unless to say how sad it was for us what happened in Japan. We couldn't believe it was true…

We received many demonstrations of solidarity from our audience. We are raising funds to send them to the Japanese Red Cross, and the people that come to make a donation are deeply touched by the accident.. Everybody would like to do something to help Japanese people and we are thankful for it!!

ローマも春ですよ～！

東京の皆さんが無事でよかったです。蕗さんのイチゴ大福、すごくおいしそうですね…!

日本で起きた震災に、ローマでも本当に心を痛めています。本当に信じられない気持ちです…。ローマ日本文化会館でも、たくさんの皆さんから応援の声をいただいています。寄付してくださる方々は皆、心のそこから日本のことを心配してくれています。みんな、日本のために何かをしたいと思ってくれていて、会館としてとてもうれしく思っています！

I know it is a bad situation but I think that it shows how positive is the image of Japan worldwide. Japan is seen as a respectful , hard- working and upstanding country. When I was a student I wrote a degree thesis about Bushido. I started studying everything about the culture of Japanese spirit . The sense of national identity and responsibility is really strong in the Japanese soul, and I believe it’s not just something lied to the past, but It’s alive also today. I really admire it!!!!!

日本にとって今は本当に大変なときですが、世界中で日本がポジティブに受け止められていることを知ることが出来たと思っています。日本は礼儀正しく、勤勉できちんとした国に見られているようです。私は学生のとき、卒業論文で武士道について書き、日本の精神文化についていろいろ調べました。日本は責任感や連帯感がとても強いといわれていますが、それは過去のものではなくて、現在も息づいているものなんですよね。本当に尊敬しています！

About our activities, as you may know, we postponed them to next month. In May we will start the movie review and we will open the garden to the public. Many people called us, because they are too looking forward to see the wonderful cherry blossoms!!! Our garden is wonderful during spring time, as you can see from the pictures. It is a beautiful piece of Japan in the heart of Rome.

イタリア在住の方はご存知だと思いますが、私たちの会館でも、予定していた事業を1ヵ月延期しました。５月には、映画上映も始めますし、会館の日本庭園の一般公開もあります。お花見を楽しみにしていた皆さんからたくさんお電話をいただきました！うちの会館の庭園は本当にきれいなんですよ！まるで、ローマの真ん中にある小さな日本です。

These days it’s possible to see our ceramic and painting collection of XX century. I'm talking about the second part of the exhibition called "Giappone 900". It is really beautiful. There are works of Tomimoto Kenkichi, Hamada Shoji, Maeda Seison and many others.

今は、20世紀の焼き物と絵画の展示をしています。この「ジャポネ900」をちょっとご紹介しましょう。ほんとーにきれいなんです。作品は、富本憲吉さん、濱田庄司さんなど、著名な作家の方々…。

As the first part of the exhibition was about the Japanese prints, this second part seems to be appreciated by the public. We are very lucky to hold an art collection like this.

第１部は日本の版画でしたので、2部のほうが人気があるみたいです。これはローマ日本文化会館のコレクションからの展示ですが、本当にすてきな作品ばかりなんです。

By now I would like just to say through this blog that Japan is not alone! And I know our office will do all the best to help and continue to promote the Japanese culture in Italy! FORZA GIAPPONE! NIPPON GANBARE!

最後に、このブログを通じて日本の皆さんにお伝えしたいのは、日本は1人じゃない！ということ。私たちローマ日本文化会館も、日本の文化をイタリアで伝えるべく、これからもベストを尽くします！

ローマは寒い日々が続いています。でもこんな時こそ、「天気がいいから、散歩しましょう」（そう、日本語能力試験の聴解部分のサンプル問題のように！）。

I watched the video of Unit Asia, it's amazing! Fuki san I love the picture of the sunrise! I have never been to Nepal, I should go! And Any san the Xmas tree in the middle of the snow is beautiful!

During Xmas Holidays, I was in Naples. I enjoyed my Mother’s home made food! I ate the struffoli! It’s a typical Neapolitan dessert: small fried balls made of eggs, flour and made compact by the honey, candied fruit and sugar confetti.

キャシーさんの記事にアップされていたUnit Asiaの動画、かっこいいですね。蕗さんの記事にアップされていた、ネパールのヒマラヤ山脈の日の出の写真もなんて素敵なのでしょう！Anyさんが紹介していた、モスクワの雪の中にたたずむクリスマスツリーも綺麗です。さて私といえば、ナポリの実家で、お母さんの手料理を堪能していました。ストルッフォリをたらふく食べましたよ！ナポリでは定番なクリスマスデザートなんです。

The ancient recipe was come down from home to home and requires the dough to be made from flour, eggs, butter, milk, grated lemon, salt, vanilla and kneaded for a long time. Then it’s cut into small pieces that are rolled into little balls of 1 cm, which are fried in oil and mixed with honey. It’s all handmade and served on a tray dressed with candied fruit and colored confetti.

レシピは昔から代々受け継がれてきたもの。まず小麦粉、卵、バター、牛乳、レモンのすりおろし、塩、バニラを練り、生地を作ります。そして1㎝くらいの小さな球状に丸めて、油で揚げ、蜂蜜を混ぜます。最後は砂糖

づけのフルーツをまぶして出来上がりです。あら、全部書いてしまいましたね;)

Dewa, a new year started and for JF Rome it means new activities, art exhibitions, concerts and so on!

From 21th of January we are exhibiting our print collection. It’s a wonderful print collection of some of the most important artists of XX century: Yayoi Kusama, Shiko Munakata, Yozo Hamaguchi.

Some of the works were sent by Japanese government to embellish our Institute on the occasion of the opening held in 1962. The other works are the artistic result of International Biennale of graphics of Tokyo 1957-1979. As you may know, in the ’60 Japanese artists became interested in different techniques trying new styles and original art form while Pop Art was spreading over America and England.

閑話休題。

新年早々、ローマ日本文化会館では、展覧会、コンサートなど、様々なイベント目白押しでした。

1月21日からは版画展を実施。草間弥生氏、棟方志功氏、浜口陽三氏など、20世紀を代表する作家の作品を紹介する、素晴らしい機会となりました。作品のうち一部は、1962年のローマ日本文化会館の開設時に日本政府から贈られたものなんですよ。その他の作品は東京国際版画ビエンナーレ展で展示されたものです。みなさんご存知の通り、アメリカやイギリスでポップアートが普及しつつあった60年代、日本人アーティストは独自の新しいテクニックを開拓していたのですね。

Many Italian newspapers wrote about our exhibition! And this Monday my colleagues Sugimoto san and Akiyama san went to Radio Vaticana to talk about our activities! It was a nice occasion to promote our activities live on one of the most famous radio in Italy!

イギリスの新聞社から多数の取材がありました！月曜日も同僚と一緒にバチカン放送局に訪問して魅力を紹介してきたばかりです。イタリアで最も有名なラジオ局のひとつでPRすることができたのは、とても貴重な機会でした。

In addition to the print exhibition, on 18th of January the movie season started! This time is about the movie director Yasuzo Masumura. Even if the movies are subtitled in English many people are coming to enjoy it. It’s interesting that one of his movies, Eden no sono, not part of our selection, was shot in Rome in 1980.

版画展に加えて、1月18日には映画上映会も開始しました。今回は増村保造監督の特集です。字幕はイタリア語ではなく英語ですが、それでも多くの観客がやってきます。今回の上映作品18本からは残念ながら外れているのですが、「エデンの園」のロケ地がここローマということも、感慨深いですね。

About our language courses, this semester we introduced a new course called "Fun Mini Courses for Japanese Language and Culture". It is for people that want to know more about Japanese pop culture, movies, literature, etc! Omoshiroii ne?!!

About our office in Rome, from the 27th September to the 6th November we held an exhibition about Japanese character. Since it was very successful we decided to extend it for one week! The most interesting thing was that people of different age came to see it!

As you know, characters and animations are loved by young and adult in the same way!

ローマでは、9月27日から11月6日まで、日本のキャラクターの展覧会をしました。あまりに人気なので、会期を１週間延長することになったんです。面白いのは、本当に幅広い世代の方が見に来てくださっていること。キャラクターとかアニメはやっぱり、こどもにも大人にも同じように愛されてるんですね。

Last week we had an opening of our exhibition about the Japanese Pavilion of The 12th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale and a lecture of Kazuyo Sejima who was the director of the Biennale this year.

先週は、第12回ヴェネチア･ビエンナーレ建築展の日本館で行った展示をローマ日本文化会館でも展示していました。総合ディレクターだった妹島和世さんのレクチャーもあったんですよ。

As you may know, she came to our institute to talk about her works and her idea of architecture. It was a very successful event, the auditorium was full of people not only they couldn’t seat, but also they were standing in corridor!

皆さん妹島さんはご存知ですよね？会館では、彼女のこれまでの作品や建築に対する考え方をお話いただきました。想像以上の大盛況で、オーディトリウムは満杯！座れなかった方がたくさんいたのは勿論、廊下のほうまで立ち見（立ち聞き）がでてしまいました！

As Kazuyo Sejima said, her architecture style is influenced by her Japanese culture, so in some projects she tried to express a feeling of “ouverture(french/ meanns "openness")” to create a direct dialogue between inside and outside of the buildings.

妹島さんはご自身の建築のスタイルは、日本の文化から大きく影響を受けているので、過去のプロジェクトでは、建物の中と外が直接つながっていく「開放性」を表現することを試みている、とお話下さいました。

The present exhibition is about the project Tokyo Metabolizing, so there are many pictures of the 2 projects presented to the Japan Pavilion of the Venice Biennale: House & Atelier Bow-Wow and the Moriyama house. I uploaded some pictures! I Hope you like it!!!

展示されているのは、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレで実際に展示されていた「トウキョウメタボライジング」で、「ハウス＆アトリエ・ワン」（アトリエ・ワン設計）と「森山邸」（西沢立衛設計）の模型です。写真をちょっとアップしてみました。どうですか？

In this period at our institute there is not only the architecture/art exhibition, but also the movie season! Twice a week our guests can come to see Japanese movies. The film review of this time is dedicated to Takeo Kimura a great set designer!

Any san, I think it was really exciting for you to teach Japanese to children! Usually they are really curious and I suppose they were really interested in learning new things about a country like Japan!

そしてアニーさん、日本語を子どもたちに教えるのは楽しいんでしょうねー。好奇心旺盛ですもんね。日本のことを新しく勉強できるのは、子どもたちにも楽しい体験だったんでしょうね！

Anyway, summer holidays are over!

Presently, the office is very busy with the setting of Autumn activities.

We are also collecting the registration for Noryoku shiken（JLPT) and we opened the enrollment for the Japanese courses. As every year, many people want to study Japanese! It's nice to notice that people of any age and social status are interested in attending our classes!! From 15 to 70 years old!

さて、夏休みも終わりですね。

最近では、ローマオフィスは秋の事業に向けて大忙しです。

それに、日本語能力試験（JLPT)の申込み受付も始まりましたし、日本語講座の申込みも受付を開始したばっかりなんです。毎年のことだけど、日本語を勉強したい人ってたくさんいるんです！15歳から70歳まで、いろんな年齢のいろんなバックグラウンドの人たちが、こんなに日本語教室に興味を持ってくれるなんてすてきです。

On August 29th the 12th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia opened!!

さて、8月29日には第12回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ建築展がオープンしましたね！

As you may know, the exhibitors for the Japanese pavillion are Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Ryue Nishizawa, the commissioner is Koh Kitayama. Unfortunately I didn't go there for the opening ceremony, but my collegue that worked there took some interesting pictures, so uploading it, I can show you the Japanese pavillion!

The basic concept is "metabolism" : the city is metabolized by replacing its functional components as if it were a machine. And This year marks the 50th anniversary of metabolism.

もう皆さんご存知かもしれませんが、今年の建築展、コミッショナーは北山恒さんで、参加作家は塚本由晴さんと西沢立衛さんですね。残念ながらオープニングには行ってないんですが、同僚が写真を送ってくれたので、アップします。これが日本館の様子です！

基本コンセプトは「メタボリズム」。都市を機能部品の置き換えによって機械のように新陳代謝させる、という考え方ですね。そして今年はメタボリズムという概念を日本から発信して、ちょうど50周年にもあたるそうです。

Ryue Nishizawa presented the Moriyama House.

It is located in an older section of Tokyo, while Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima presented the House & Atelier of Bow-Wow, a fourth generation house that stands in a crowded section in an urban village.

西沢さんは東京にある森山邸を、塚本さんは貝島桃代さんと一緒にハウス＆アトリエ・ワンを紹介していました。

My collegue told me that many visitors and journalists came to visit the Japanese pavillion and they seemed to be very interested and liked it!

オープニングに行った同僚は、取材もお客さんもたくさん日本館に来ていて、みんなすごく好意的に受け止めていたみたいだと話してくれました。
